Template Details
mini, developed by dane, is a minimalist blog theme for Hugo, with the repository under the BSD-3-Clause license. The theme's visual and structural design references the clean presentation of hmarr.com, but the code was written by the author and incorporates purple as an accent color.
The theme only reads three keys under params in hugo.yaml: github (GitHub homepage link), mastodon (Mastodon profile link), and footer (free text displayed in the footer of each blog post). The theme deliberately disables syntax highlighting; the author believes that without syntax highlighting, code must remain clean and simple.
The theme currently does not support social platform links such as Twitter, Instagram, or GitLab. The author states this is because they do not use these platforms, but contributions to extend it are welcome. The demo site is daneharrigan.com, and the repository version is 0.0.2.
Is it right for your project?
Use Cases
- Building a personal blog focused on text articles
- Hugo users who want a simple blog interface without complex configuration
- Blogs that need to display fixed explanatory text or acknowledgments in the footer
- Sites that prefer to disable syntax highlighting and present code snippets as plain text
Suitable For
- Individual developers or writers building static blogs with Hugo
- Site owners who like minimalist typography and purple accent style
- Users who only need GitHub and Mastodon links and do not require other social platform integrations
- Users who accept extending social links or features themselves to suit their needs
Getting started & customization
Use these recorded setup notes alongside the repository instructions for your chosen version.
- 1
The theme only reads three keys from params in hugo.yaml: github, mastodon, footer, which must be filled in according to the example format.
- 2
footer is free text and will be displayed in the footer of each blog post.
- 3
The theme disables syntax highlighting by default; if highlighting is needed, adjust the Hugo configuration yourself.
- 4
The theme does not include social links for Twitter, Instagram, GitLab, etc. If needed, they can be added through contributions or by modifying the theme yourself.
- 5
Third-party assets such as demo images and fonts (e.g., Hack font) must be checked separately under their respective licenses.
License & source material
Usage conditions & limitations
Free to use · keep license noticeThis entry covers the free version in the public repository under the BSD-3-Clause license; the free scope is the code of this version and does not mean that external services or third-party assets are free.
Must comply with when using
- Free use, modification, commercial use, and distribution in source code or binary form are permitted.
- Source code distribution must retain the copyright notice, the three conditions, and the disclaimer; binary distribution must reproduce these in the documentation or accompanying materials.
- Without prior written permission, the names of the copyright holder or contributors may not be used to endorse or promote derivative products.
- The code is provided as is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.
Additional costs & items to verify
- Demo images, fonts, icons, and other third-party assets must be checked under their respective licenses and cannot be judged solely by the code's BSD-3-Clause license.
- External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments, or AI may incur additional charges.
- The theme does not include built-in support for social platform links such as Twitter, Instagram, or GitLab; the author did not implement them simply because they do not personally use them. If these integrations are needed, you must modify the code yourself or submit a contribution to extend it.
- The theme disables syntax highlighting by default, so code snippets are presented without highlighting; if syntax highlighting is needed, you must adjust the Hugo configuration yourself.
- The theme only reads three keys from params in hugo.yaml: github, mastodon, footer. Other configuration keys will not be recognized, and extending functionality requires modifying the theme yourself.

How this score is calculated
Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.
The catalog identifies Hugo as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.

Demo: [daneharrigan.com](https://daneharrigan.com)
A minimal Hugo blog theme that is responsive with a touch of purple.
## Overview
This theme is _heavily_ inspired by [hmarr.com](https://hmarr.com). I would have
happily used his theme, but it hasn't been open sourced so I put together
something similar. I appreciate how clean and simply content is presented and
that dynamic farewell in the footer are a nice touch.
To stay in line with inspiration and not a blatant copy, nothing was taken from
Harry's site. I wrote everything myself and opted to skip the dynamic footer. I
use the [Hack](https://sourcefoundry.org/hack/) font instead of
[JetBrains Mono](https://www.jetbrains.com/lp/mono/) and I am partial to purple.
## Syntax highlighting
I have strong opinions on syntax highlighting. This theme was created with
highlighting disabled. I believe and have seen first hand, without syntax
highlighting, code must be clean and simple. You don't really have a choice.
I'll write about this one day.
## Configuration
Mini only looks for three keys in `hugo.yaml`'s `params`.
- `github` - A link to your GitHub page.
- `mastodon` - A link to your Mastodon profile.
- `footer` - Free form text that will appear in the footer of every blog post.
For example:
```yaml
params:
github: 'https://github.com/dane'
mastodon: 'https://mastodon.social/@daneharrigan'
footer: |-
Thank you for reading an entry in my collection of blog posts.
```
## Contributing
I'm happy to discuss new features and receive pull requests. Mini doesn't
support Twitter, Instagram, Gitlab, etc. only because I don't use them, but it
could with your help.
