Template Details

This is a Jekyll website template for clubs. The README states that it can be customized without writing code: background, fonts, and font colors are all configurable; users only need to provide images and specify file paths, font-family, and font color. The template includes 5 layouts (indexLayout, homeLayout, eventsLayout, pastEventsLayout, peopleLayout) and 3 includes (header, footer, socialLinks). The homepage displays the club name, logo, and links to other pages; the name and links are configured in _config.yml, while background and fonts are set in the front matter of index.md. home.md controls the content of the main page except for the header and footer. The fonts and background of the events page are configured in _config.yml; the _events folder stores event Markdown files, and subfolders can be created for organization without affecting the code. pastEvents.md automatically lists events from _events as an archive. people.md works with _data/people.yml to list the names and photos of past leaders or members. Social links are included by the footer via socialLinks.html, and links can be added, removed, or modified in _data/social.yml. The template provides a transparent logo placeholder at assets/img/logo.png and social icons under assets/img/social/. The README does not provide specific framework version numbers, performance, or production environment suitability statements.

Use Cases

  • Building a static website for a school or community club that includes a homepage, main page, event archive, and member introductions

Suitable For

  • Club maintainers familiar with or willing to use the Jekyll and Ruby toolchain
  • Non-frontend developers who want to manage content with Markdown and YAML data files
  • Club organizations that need event archives and pages showing past members

Usage conditions & limitations

Free to use · keep license notice

This entry covers the free version in a public repository under the MIT license; the free scope applies to that version's code and does not imply that external services or third-party assets are free.

Must comply with when using

  • Free use, modification, commercial use, and distribution of this version's code are permitted.
  • When distributing copies or substantial portions of the code, retain the original author's copyright notice and the full MIT license notice.
  • The code is provided as is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.

Additional costs & items to verify

  • Demo images, fonts, icons, and other third-party assets must be checked against their respective licenses; the code's MIT license alone is not sufficient to determine this.
  • External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments, or AI may incur additional fees.
  • Using this template requires installing a Ruby environment, downloaded and installed from the official Ruby website.
  • Jekyll must be installed by running gem install jekyll in the Ruby command line.
  • A fork must be created via the repository's Use this template button, cloned locally, and bundle install run before use.
  • Before local testing, the baseurl variable must be commented out in _config.yml; otherwise local preview will not work properly.
  • For hosting, the README suggests deploying to GitHub Pages using the club's GitHub account, or hosting on IISERM; contact the author or the Turing Club lead for specific hosting steps.

How this score is calculated

Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.

The catalog identifies HTML as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.

# club-website-template

This is an easily customizable template for club websites. Here is a [website built using this template.](https://James471.github.io/club-website-template)

The good thing about this theme is that you don't have to code for anything. All the backgrounds and fonts are customizable. You just need to provide the images(and write down the paths to the files you have provided), font-families and font-colour. Continue reading to understand the details. If you are confused, contact [me](mailto:[email protected]) or find me in the library.

## Using the theme

Install ruby. You can download ruby from its [official website](https://rubyinstaller.org/downloads/)

Go to start and search 'ruby'. You will find ```start command prompt with ruby```. Open it and type ```gem install jekyll``` and press enter. If you use mac or linux, I assume you know what to do.

Click on ```Use this template button``` on the page of this repository. You will get the option to fork this repo. Make a public fork if you want to receive pull requests(i.e., receive the changes that I might make in future in this template). Next, clone your fork locally. Then, open ruby command prompt and cd to the directory of this repo. Run ```bundle install```. Now you should be set.

**Here comes the tricky part**

You must comment the variable ```baseurl``` in your ```_config.yml``` file before testing this locally. To test locally, cd to the directory and run ```bundle exec jekyll serve```. To make more changes, see the usage section.

## Usage

This theme has 5 layouts and 3 includes.

### Available layouts

**Move to the markdown files as mentioned in the description of each layout below for further instructions on customization. You don't need to change any of the layout files. Just change their markdown files.**
1. indexLayout.html → It is the front page your website. The name of your club, its logo and the links to other pages can be customized in _config.yml while the background and fonts can be changed in the front matter of ```index.md```. For customizing the social links, see the includes section.
3. homeLayout.html → It is the home page of your website. All the customization for this page except the header and footer can be made in the front matter of ```home.md```
4. eventsLayout.html → It is used by all the events. The font and background can be customized in _config.yml. A sample markdown file for an example event is provided in _events/Example. It contains further details.
5. pastEventsLayout.html → It's the archive of all the events conducted by your club. It can be customized in the front matter of ```pastEvents.md```. It automatically lists your posts from the _events folder. You can have subfolders in _events for organization purposes. It won't have any effect on the code.
6. peopleLayout.html → It lists the names and a photograph of each convenor/co-convenor/anyone who has held any role in the past. It can be customised in the front matter of ```people.md```. In order to add the names of more people, head to _data/people.yml

### Includes
1. header.html → It's the header which appears on every page of your website except the front page. It's font and background can be customised in _config.yml
2. footer.html → It's the footer which appears on every page of your website except the front page. It's font and background can be customised in _config.yml. The social media links are included from socialLinks.html
3. socialLinks.html → It contains the links to various social media/github pages of your club. It's included by the footer to display the links. You can add/remove/update these links in ```_data/social.yml```

### Assets
1. Some of the clubs don't have a logo. So, we have provided ```assets/img/logo.png``` which is a transparent image. You can use it or provide a logo for your club. This logo will appear above the club name on the front page.
2. Icons for several social media sites have been provided in ```assets/img/social/``` for use in socialLinks.html

So, all in all, you have to edit the following files
1. ```_config.yml```
2. ```index.md```
3. ```home.md```
4. ```pastEvents.md```
5. ```people.md```
6. ```_data/social.yml```
7. ```people.yml```
8. Provide all images you are gonna use.

## Development

To set up your environment to develop this theme, run `bundle install`.

Your theme is setup just like a normal Jekyll site! To test your theme, run `bundle exec jekyll serve` and open your browser at `http://localhost:4000`. This starts a Jekyll server using your theme. Add pages, documents, data, etc. like normal to test your theme's contents. As you make modifications to your theme and to your content, your site will regenerate and you should see the changes in the browser after a refresh, just like normal.

When your theme is released, only the files in `_layouts`, `_includes`, `_sass` and `assets` tracked with Git will be bundled.
To add a custom directory to your theme-gem, please edit the regexp in `club-website-template.gemspec` accordingly.

The theme is available as open source under the terms of the [MIT License](https://opensource.org/licenses/MIT).
