Template Details

webxi is an ultra lightweight website template for embedded microcontrollers, designed to make page files small enough to be hosted on devices with limited on-chip flash. The design targets given in the README are: index.html under 5kB, webxi.css under 5kB, and no JavaScript.

The template provides static assets such as an index page, a 404 page, CSS and images, and can be combined with CGI and SSI to serve as a dynamic web interface on devices such as STM32. The example in the README shows that a CGI interface with SSI enabled occupies less than 6kB of flash in total.

The README does not document specific framework versions, build toolchains, browser compatibility ranges or production deployment methods; its customization workflow depends on external tools (image compression, CSS/HTML compression) and on the makefsdata.pl script from the tutorial to convert the fs directory into C code.

  • Developers focused on file size and JavaScript-free approaches

Getting started & customization

Use these recorded setup notes alongside the repository instructions for your chosen version.

  1. 1

    The README does not provide complete installation or deployment steps, only the customization and conversion workflow

  2. 2

    Customization can use flatuicolors.com color schemes, image compression tools, and CSS/HTML compression tools

  3. 3

    The tutorial page provides the makefsdata.pl script, which converts the fs directory into C code reflecting the server root path

  4. 4

    The README mentions the STM32 Nucleo F767ZI web server CGI + SSI tutorial as a reference

Additional costs & items to verify

  • Demo images, fonts, icons and other third-party assets must be checked against their respective licenses and cannot be judged solely by the code's MIT license.
  • External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments or AI may incur separate charges.
  • The tutorial for deploying CGI + SSI on STM32 is on the external site ausleuchtung.ch and requires visiting that external page.
  • The makefsdata.pl script that converts the fs directory into C code is on the external tutorial page and is not in this repository.
  • Color customization suggests using the palette from the external site flatuicolors.com.
  • Logo image compression suggests using the external tool compresspng.com.
  • CSS compression suggests using the external tool cssminifier.com.
  • HTML compression suggests using the external tool kangax.github.io/html-minifier.

How this score is calculated

Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.

The catalog identifies HTML as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.

# webxi

WebXi is an **ultra lightweight**, fabulous looking website template with focus on **low file size** to run on the limited memory size of embedded microcontrollers.

---

### Preface

Embedded microcontrollers like the [`STM32F746zg`](https://www.st.com/en/microcontrollers-microprocessors/stm32f746zg.html) usually have around `1MB` of on board flash. Altough an embedded system design might incorporate additional external flash memory, it is still desirable to have very compact files to host for performance reasons.

#### Design Criteria

| description | requirement |
|:------------|:------------|
| memory usage of `index.html` | `< 5kB` |
| memory usage of `webxi.css` | `< 5kB` |
| JavaScript | no |

### Customization & Implementation

- customize using a color palette [flatuicolors.com](https://flatuicolors.com/)
- use an [image compressor](https://compresspng.com/) for Logos
- use a [CSS minifier](https://cssminifier.com/) for the `webxi.css`
- use a [HTML minifier](https://kangax.github.io/html-minifier/)
- Tutorial for a CGI + SSI Website on STM32 [ausleuchtung.ch](http://ausleuchtung.ch/stm32-nucleo-f767zi-web-server/)

The minifiers achieve up to 50% smaller file size!

On the tutorial page you find a `makefsdata.pl` Perl script to transform the `fs` folder into `C` code reflecting the root path of the webserver.

```
opening root directory, found the following files and all subdirectories to process:
  404.shtml css img index.shtml
Processing directory css
  Adding files: webxi.css
Processing directory img
  Adding files: logo.png
Starting convert files to arrays process:
  Adding file: 404.shtml
  /404.shtml, Bytesread = 236
  Adding file: index.shtml
  /index.shtml, Bytesread = 1525
  Adding file: css/webxi.css
  /css/webxi.css, Bytesread = 1828
  Adding file: img/logo.png
  /img/logo.png, Bytesread = 1785
```

In total this example of a SSI enabled (dynamic) CGI Interface requires less than `6kB` of flash memory.

> Do you miss something? Did you spot some webdesign specific bad practice?

Unfortunately, I am no webdesigner. I challenge you to create other ultra-lightweight themes for Embedded Systems :)
