Template Details
This is a personal academic website by Niloy Deb, available online at https://niloydebme.github.io/webpage/. The site is customized from AcademicPages (Minimal Mistakes theme), built with Jekyll, and published directly from the repository via GitHub Pages.
In terms of content structure, the site includes a home page (personal bio, research interest diagram, and News & Updates), a research page, a CV page, a publications list, a teaching list and course pages, as well as blog / Webliography archive pages. Publications are maintained as one Markdown file per publication under the `_publications/` directory; they appear on both the publications page and the CV, and each generates its own abstract page. News items are centralized in `_data/news.yml` and displayed in reverse chronological order.
For customization, author information, sidebar bio, email, personal links, and site description are modified under `author:` in `_config.yml`; top navigation is in `_data/navigation.yml`; the page framework is in `_layouts/minimal.html`; colors, fonts, and spacing are defined uniformly in `assets/css/site.css`, and pages use CSS classes rather than inline styles. Images and downloadable files are placed in the `images/` and `files/` directories respectively, and referenced by concatenating the `/webpage` prefix via `relative_url`.
For deployment, pushing to the GitHub Pages build branch (currently master) triggers automatic building by GitHub; build errors can be viewed in the repository's Actions tab. Local preview requires Ruby 3.x and Bundler; run `bundle install` and `bundle exec jekyll serve`, then visit http://localhost:4000/webpage/. After modifying `_config.yml`, the server must be restarted.
Regarding licensing, the theme code is under the MIT license, and the site content copyright belongs to Niloy Deb; third-party assets such as demo images, fonts, and icons must be checked individually under their respective licenses.
Is it right for your project?

- Personal site scenarios requiring unified management of publications, CV, teaching, and news
Getting started & customization
Use these recorded setup notes alongside the repository instructions for your chosen version.
- 1
Local preview requires Ruby 3.x and Bundler; run bundle install and bundle exec jekyll serve, then visit http://localhost:4000/webpage/
- 2
After modifying _config.yml, the local server must be restarted
- 3
For deployment, push to the GitHub Pages build branch (currently master); build errors can be viewed in the repository's Actions tab
- 4
When referencing images or files, use the relative_url filter to automatically add the /webpage prefix; filenames are recommended to be lowercase and without spaces
- 5
The theme code is under the MIT license, and the site content copyright belongs to the author; third-party assets such as demo images, fonts, and icons must be checked under their respective licenses

Usage conditions & limitations
Free to use · keep license noticeThis entry covers the free version under the MIT license in the public repository; the free scope is the code of this version and does not imply that external services or third-party assets are free.
Must comply with when using
- Free use, modification, commercial use, and distribution of this version's code are permitted.
- When distributing copies or substantial portions of the code, retain the original author's copyright notice and the full MIT license notice.
- The code is provided as is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.
Additional costs & items to verify
- The MIT license covers only the theme code; site content (text, images, publications, etc.) is copyright Niloy Deb and may not be redistributed as free content.
- Local preview requires installing Ruby 3.x and Bundler yourself; it is not purely static and ready to use out of the box.
- Deployment depends on a GitHub account and the GitHub Pages service, and requires pushing the repository to the GitHub build branch.
- Demo images, fonts, icons, and other third-party assets must be checked under their respective licenses; they cannot be judged solely by the code's MIT license.
- External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments, or AI may incur additional charges.

How this score is calculated
Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.
What to verify for this project
- Repository update recorded

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.
The catalog identifies HTML as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.

## Where to edit what
| To change | Edit |
|---|---|
| Name, sidebar bio, e-mail, profile links, site description | `_config.yml` → `author:` |
| Header menu | `_data/navigation.yml` |
| Home page intro and research-interests diagram | `_pages/about.md` |
| Home page **News & Updates** | `_data/news.yml` (newest first) |
| Research page | `_pages/research.html` |
| CV page | `_pages/cv.html` (publications fill in automatically) |
| Publications | one file per paper in `_publications/` (see below) |
| Teaching list / course pages | `_pages/teaching.html` / `_teaching/*.md` |
| Blog / Webliography | `_pages/year-archive.html` |
| Page frame (header, tabs, footer) | `_layouts/minimal.html`; header lines and CV link in `_config.yml` -> `author:` |
| Colours, fonts, spacing | `assets/css/site.css` |
| Images / downloadable files | `images/`, `files/` |
Pages use CSS classes defined in `assets/css/site.css` rather than inline `style="..."` attributes, so a look change is made in one place.
### Adding a news item
Add at the top of `_data/news.yml`:
```yaml
- date: 2026-10-01
text: "Short description. <b>Bold</b> and <a href='https://...'>links</a> are allowed."
```
### Adding a publication
Create `_publications/YYYY-journal-firstauthor.md` (lower-case, hyphens, no spaces):
```yaml
---
title: "Paper title in sentence case"
authors: "A. Author, Niloy Deb, B. Author"
venue: "Journal Name" # or "Proc. <Conference name> (<ACRONYM YEAR>)"
details: "Vol. 12, Article 3456" # volume/pages; optional
year: 2026
doi: "10.xxxx/xxxxx" # without https://doi.org/
pdf: "/files/paper.pdf" # optional, file in files/
note: "Best Paper Award" # optional
category: manuscripts # manuscripts | conferences | books
date: 2026-01-31 # used for ordering
keywords: "Keyword | Keyword | Keyword"
---
Abstract text as one plain paragraph.
```
It then appears, formatted identically, on the Publications page and in the CV (grouped by category, newest first), and gets its own abstract page. "Niloy Deb" is bolded automatically.
### Linking an image or file
Always go through `relative_url` so the `/webpage` prefix is added for you:
```html
<img src="{{ '/images/figure.png' | relative_url }}" alt="…">
<a href="{{ '/files/lecture.pdf' | relative_url }}">[pdf]</a>
```
Use lower-case file names without spaces.
## Deploying
Commit and push to the branch GitHub Pages builds from (Settings → Pages; currently `master`). GitHub builds the site in a minute or two; build errors appear under the repository's **Actions** tab.
## Previewing locally (optional)
Requires Ruby 3.x with Bundler ([RubyInstaller](https://rubyinstaller.org/) on Windows, with the MSYS2 dev kit).
```bash
bundle install
bundle exec jekyll serve
```
Then open http://localhost:4000/webpage/. Restart the server after editing `_config.yml`.
