Single-file configuration: data/profile.toml controls name, title, institution, bio, education history, research interests, CV, social links, theme, search, selected publications, sidebar and content width, accent color, and more
academic-builder — HTML Portfolio Template
By BhattHarshit
Academic Builder is a Hugo-based academic personal website template that configures name, title, affiliation, bio, education, research interests, social links, and theme through a single file data/profile.toml, and supports automatic generation of navigation tabs from Markdown pages, TOML-managed publication lists, and automatic deployment to GitHub Pages.

What stands out
A quick read of the recorded project description.
Publication data is centralized in data/publications.toml; the Publications page and the homepage selected publications section update automatically, and entries support DOI, PDF, code, abstract, BibTeX, and a selected flag
Creating a new top-level Markdown file under content/ automatically generates desktop and mobile navigation tabs, sorted by weight, and supports optional front matter such as menu, toc, math, search, and external_url
Provides a GitHub Actions workflow; after setting the repository Source to GitHub Actions, it can automatically deploy to GitHub Pages
Built with Hugo, with optional MathJax typesetting for LaTeX math formulas
The CV is provided by replacing static/files/cv.pdf; the CV tab opens the PDF directly
Template Details
Academic Builder is a Hugo template for academic personal homepages, with the repository at BhattHarshit/academic-builder. The README describes its positioning as an academic website template with "easy setup and advanced navigation tools" and provides a live demo link.
Configuration centers on a single file: editing data/profile.toml controls name, title, institution, department, email, location, avatar, personal bio, education history, research interests, CV, social links, theme behavior, search, selected publications, sidebar width, content width, and accent color. Publication data is stored separately in data/publications.toml, and the Publications page and the Selected Publications section on the homepage update accordingly; entries can include DOI, PDF, code, abstract, BibTeX, and a selected = true flag. The CV is provided by replacing static/files/cv.pdf; the CV tab opens that PDF directly, and the path or tab can be adjusted in profile.toml.
Pages are extended by creating a new top-level Markdown file under content/; after filling in title and weight, it automatically becomes a navigation tab on desktop and mobile, with smaller weight appearing earlier. Optional front matter includes menu: false (keep the page but hide the navigation tab), toc: true (show an in-page table of contents), math: true (load MathJax to typeset LaTeX), search: false (exclude the page from site search), and external_url (make the tab point to an external page).
The deployment process relies on GitHub: create a repository named your_Github_username.github.io using the template, set Source to GitHub Actions in Settings → Pages, then commit changes to data/profile.toml, or manually run the Deploy Hugo site to GitHub Pages workflow in Actions, and the site is published at https://your_Github_username.github.io/. Local preview requires installing Hugo Extended and then running hugo server.
On the technical side, the README states the template is built with Hugo, optionally uses MathJax for math typesetting, and its main structure includes content/, data/, layouts/, static/css/site.css, static/js/site.js, static/images/, static/files/cv.pdf, and .github/workflows/. The README does not provide specific framework version numbers, browser compatibility, accessibility support, performance data, or deployment methods other than GitHub Pages. In the acknowledgments, the template states that it was partly inspired by the MIT-licensed al-folio project and is an independent Hugo implementation.

How this score is calculated
Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.
The catalog identifies HTML as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.

## Quick start
1. Create a GitHub account if you don't have one and log in with it.
2. Click **Use this template** in the top right corner.
3. Create a **new repository** and name it: `your_Github_username.github.io`.
4. Open **Settings → Pages** and under **Build and deployment**, set **Source** to **GitHub Actions**.
5. Edit `data/profile.toml` slightly and commit changes. (OR, open **Actions → Deploy Hugo site to GitHub Pages → Run workflow**.)
4. Your website will be available at: `https://your_Github_username.github.io/`
5. Edit `data/profile.toml` to update your information and replace `static/images/avatar.svg` and `static/files/cv.pdf` with your files.
## One-file site customization
Edit only:
```text
data/profile.toml
```
It controls your name, title, institution, department, email, location, profile image, bio, education, research interests, CV, social links, theme behavior, search, selected publications, sidebar width, content width, and accent colors.
## Add a page/tab
Create any top-level Markdown file in `content/`:
```yaml
---
title: "Projects"
weight: 25
---
Your content here.
```
It automatically becomes a desktop and mobile navigation tab. Lower `weight` values appear first.
Useful optional front matter:
```yaml
menu: false # keep the page but hide its navigation tab
toc: true # show an on-page table of contents
math: true # load MathJax for LaTeX
search: false # omit the page from site search
external_url: "https://example.com" # make the tab open an external page
```
## Publications
Edit:
```text
data/publications.toml
```
The Publications page and homepage Selected Publications section update automatically. Entries can include DOI, PDF, code, abstract, BibTeX, and a `selected = true` flag.
## CV
Replace:
```text
static/files/cv.pdf
```
The CV tab opens the PDF directly. Change its path or label in `data/profile.toml` if needed.
## Run locally (optional)
Install Hugo Extended, then run:
```bash
hugo server
```
## Main structure
```text
content/ # Independent Markdown pages / navigation tabs
data/profile.toml # Site-wide identity, links, design, and features
data/publications.toml # Publication records
layouts/ # Hugo templates and publication renderer
static/css/site.css # Visual system
static/js/site.js # Theme, mobile menu, search, back-to-top
static/images/ # Profile image and site images
static/files/cv.pdf # CV
.github/workflows/ # GitHub Pages deployment
```
