Template Details
venefish is a Next.js starter template maintained by enesien. It uses the App Router, React, and TypeScript; the UI layer consists of shadcn/ui and Tailwind; and backend capabilities come from Firebase Authentication and the Firestore database. The repository name itself corresponds to the four components: Vercel, Next.js, Firebase, and shadcn.
The template does not include firebase/admin by default. The README explains that to use the Admin SDK on the server, you need to create a .env.local file in the project root, define the FIREBASE_ADMIN_SDK variable, fill it with the stringified Firebase service account private key, and configure an environment variable with the same name in Vercel; the repository's api/test.ts can be used to convert the private key into a string.
The basic usage flow is: first enable authentication in your Firebase project, paste the public Firebase configuration into components/firebase-providers.tsx, then run npm i and npm run dev. The repository provides an online demo site and includes desktop and mobile homepage screenshots.
Regarding licensing, the repository uses the MIT license, allowing free use, modification, commercial use, and distribution of this version of the code, provided the copyright notice and license notice are retained when distributing. The code is provided as is. External services such as Firebase have their own quotas and pricing rules, and third-party assets such as demo images, fonts, and icons need to be checked separately for licensing.
Is it right for your project?
Use Cases
- Quickly set up a Next.js project skeleton with Firebase Authentication
- Need a React starting interface using shadcn/ui and Tailwind
- Preparing to deploy a Next.js application to Vercel and connect Firebase services
- Use the Firebase Admin SDK on the server via the FIREBASE_ADMIN_SDK environment variable
Suitable For
- Developers familiar with React and TypeScript who want to start with the Next.js App Router
- Projects planning to use Firebase Authentication and Firestore
- Teams using shadcn/ui and Tailwind as their styling solution
- Projects that need an MIT license and the freedom to modify and use commercially
Getting started & customization
Use these recorded setup notes alongside the repository instructions for your chosen version.
- 1
Enable authentication in your Firebase project and fill the public Firebase configuration into components/firebase-providers.tsx
- 2
Run npm i to install dependencies and npm run dev to start the development environment
- 3
If you need firebase/admin, create .env.local in the root directory and define FIREBASE_ADMIN_SDK, and also configure an environment variable with the same name in Vercel
- 4
You can use api/test.ts to convert the Firebase service account private key into a string that can be written into an environment variable
- 5
Before enabling external services such as Firebase, check quotas and pricing yourself, and separately confirm third-party asset licenses
License & source material
Usage conditions & limitations
Free to use · keep license noticeThis entry covers the free version of the public repository under the MIT license; the free scope is the code of this version and does not mean that external services or third-party assets are free.
Must comply with when using
- You are allowed to freely use, modify, use commercially, and distribute this version of the code.
- When distributing copies or substantial portions of the code, retain the original author's copyright notice and the complete MIT license notice.
- The code is provided as is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.
Additional costs & items to verify
- Before use, you must create a Firebase project and enable authentication yourself, and paste the public Firebase configuration into components/firebase-providers.tsx; otherwise the template will not run.
- If you need to use firebase/admin, you must obtain the Firebase service account private key yourself, stringify it, and fill it into the FIREBASE_ADMIN_SDK environment variable; this feature is not included in the project by default.
- When deploying to Vercel, you need to configure an environment variable with the same name, FIREBASE_ADMIN_SDK, on the platform side, which depends on an external platform account and configuration.
- Free use is limited to the low-quota tiers of Vercel and Firebase; as usage grows, you must pay according to the pricing rules of these external services.
- The README mentions Firebase integration; before enabling related dynamic features, you need to configure them yourself and check Firebase quotas and pricing.
- Demo images, fonts, icons, and other third-party assets need to be checked against their respective licenses and cannot be judged solely by the code's MIT license.
- External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments, or AI may incur additional charges.

How this score is calculated
Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.
What to verify for this project

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.
The catalog identifies Next.js as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.

### Boilerplate for React TypeScript projects using Next.js, shadcn/ui, Tailwind and Firebase on Vercel!
> Now using Next.js app router!
This stack is 🔥 because projects can be built and deployed for free until you get to higher tiers within Vercel/Firebase which only happens once you get lots of DAUs.
- **Ve**rcel for cloud and automated deployments
- **Ne**xt.js for better React
- **Fi**rebase for auth and database (Firestore)
- **Sh**adcn and Tailwind for UI/styling
**Let me know if you have any questions! Godspeed.**
## Setup
1. Make sure your Firebase project has authentication added
1. Get your public Firebase config and paste it into `components\firebase-providers.tsx`
1. `npm i` and `npm run dev`
The following is only needed if you want to use `firebase/admin` (not part of this project by default)
1. Create a new file at the root level called `.env.local`
1. Define a new variable there called `FIREBASE_ADMIN_SDK`
1. Get your Firebase service account private key and stringify it then set the above variable to that string
> e.g.: `FIREBASE_ADMIN_SDK={"type":"service_account","project_id":"sleeptoken",...}`
### Notes
- You can use `api/test.ts` to stringify your private key so you can use in in the environment
- You need to define the same `FIREBASE_ADMIN_SDK` environment variable in Vercel
