Template Details

This theme ports the design and layout of astro-erudite to the Hugo static site generator. The author rewrote the templates and styles so that it does not depend on React, Astro, or Tailwind, using only HTML, CSS, and Hugo templates. The theme is dark by default, offers a dark/light toggle, and follows system preference by default.

In terms of content structure, the theme uses Hugo's mainSections to split the blog and project portfolio into two independent content types, and supports Hugo's native tags and categories. Blog posts are written in Markdown, and front matter supports fields such as tags and pinned; the about page can use an inline HTML timeline list to present a career timeline. Styles are split into uncompressed modular files such as color.css, layout.css, and typography.css for easy reading and modification. JavaScript is used only for theme switching, and the sitemap is generated automatically by Hugo.

Before use, you need to configure theme, params.author, and mainSections in hugo.toml, as well as the main and social menus, and enable Goldmark's unsafe rendering; otherwise raw HTML components such as the timeline will not take effect. The theme is released under the MIT license, and third-party assets such as demo images, fonts, and icons need to be checked separately for licensing.

Is it right for your project?

Use Cases

  • Building a personal blog or portfolio site with a project showcase section using Hugo
  • Migrating a site originally based on astro-erudite to the Hugo stack
  • A minimalist site that is primarily dark, can switch to light, and has styles that can be modified directly
  • Presenting personal experience with an inline HTML timeline list on the about page

Suitable For

  • Personal site authors who use Hugo and want to write content in Markdown
  • Developers who need both blog and project portfolio content types
  • Users who prefer a lightweight theme with no NPM dependencies and directly editable CSS

Getting started & customization

Use these recorded setup notes alongside the repository instructions for your chosen version.

  1. 1

    In an existing or new Hugo site, clone the repository into themes/erudite, or set theme = 'erudite' in hugo.toml

  2. 2

    Configure params.author (name, role, avatar), params.mainSections, and the main and social menus in hugo.toml

  3. 3

    Enable markup.goldmark.renderer.unsafe = true; otherwise raw HTML components such as the about page timeline will not render

Usage conditions & limitations

Free to use · keep license notice

This entry covers the free version under the MIT license in the public repository; the free scope is the code of that version and does not mean that external services or third-party assets are free.

Must comply with when using

  • You may use, modify, commercialize, and distribute the code of this version for free.
  • When distributing copies or substantial portions of the code, retain the original author's copyright notice and the full MIT license notice.
  • The code is provided as is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.

Additional costs & items to verify

  • When using raw HTML components such as the timeline, you must enable Goldmark's unsafe rendering (unsafe = true) in hugo.toml; otherwise these inline HTML components will not take effect.
  • The theme must be placed in the Hugo site's themes/erudite directory by cloning or git submodule, and theme = 'erudite' must be set in hugo.toml before it can be used.
  • The timeline, navigation, and sidebar depend on configuration in hugo.toml such as params.author, params.mainSections, and the main and social menus; without configuration, the related features will not work properly.
  • Demo images, fonts, icons, and other third-party assets must be checked against their respective licenses and cannot be judged solely by the code's MIT license.
  • External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments, or AI may incur separate charges.

How this score is calculated

Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.

The catalog identifies Astro as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.

# Hugo Theme Erudite

**Hugo Theme Erudite** is a minimalist, dark-mode focused Hugo theme ported from the elegant [astro-erudite](https://github.com/jktrn/astro-erudite) theme, enhanced with a pure native Hugo architecture and layout system.

> **📖 Want to learn more about the original design?**
> This theme's layout and styling are heavily based on [astro-erudite](https://github.com/jktrn/astro-erudite) by [@jktrn](https://github.com/jktrn), which I discovered through [merox-erudite](https://github.com/meroxdotdev/merox-erudite) by [@meroxdotdev](https://github.com/meroxdotdev). For detailed design philosophy and the original implementation, visit the official astro-erudite repository.

## 🎯 What's Different from astro-erudite?

This theme has been completely rebuilt from the ground up to support the **Hugo** Static Site Generator.

### ✨ New Hugo-Native Features
- **Zero NPM Dependencies** - Pure HTML, CSS, and Hugo templating. No React, Astro, or Tailwind required.
- **Blazing Fast Builds** - Leverages Go-based Hugo for sub-second build times.
- **Hugo Taxonomy Support** - Native support for Tags and Categories.
- **Projects & Blog Sections** - Separate content types natively routed through Hugo `mainSections`.
- **Pure CSS Layouts** - Un-minified, easy to read, modular CSS (`color.css`, `layout.css`, `typography.css`, etc.)

## 📋 Features

- 🌓 **Dark/Light Mode Toggle** (Respects system preference by default)
- 📱 Fully responsive layout
- 📝 Blog authoring with Markdown
- 🏢 Project portfolio section
- 🏷️ Tagging system
- ⏱️ Dynamic Experience Timeline component
- ⚡ Minimal JavaScript footprint (only for theme toggling)
- 🔍 Automatic Sitemap generation

## 🚀 Getting Started

### 1. Create a new Hugo Site
If you don't already have a Hugo site, create one:
```bash
hugo new site my-blog
cd my-blog
```

### 2. Install the Theme
Clone this repository into your `themes` folder:
```bash
git clone https://github.com/Fabshkiee/hugo-theme-erudite.git themes/erudite
```

*(Alternatively, you can add it as a git submodule: `git submodule add ... themes/erudite`)*

### 3. Update Configuration
Add the theme to your site's configuration file (`hugo.toml`):
```toml
theme = 'erudite'
```

### 4. Start the Server
Run the local Hugo development server:
```bash
hugo server -D
```
Open your browser and visit `http://localhost:1313`

## ⚙️ Configuration

Copy the following into your `hugo.toml` to get the necessary parameters for the timeline, navigation, and sidebar to work:

```toml
baseURL = 'https://yoursite.com/'
locale = 'en-us'
title = 'Your Name'
theme = 'erudite'
[params]
  description = "Role · Hobbyist · Creator"
  mainSections = ["blog"]
[params.author]
  name = "Your Name"
  role = "Your Role @ Company"
  avatar = "https://github.com/ghost.png" # Link to your Avatar
[markup.goldmark.renderer]
  unsafe = true # Required for raw HTML components like the timeline
[[menu.main]]
  identifier = "blog"
  name = "Blog"
  url = "/blog/"
  weight = 10
[[menu.main]]
  identifier = "projects"
  name = "Projects"
  url = "/projects/"
  weight = 20
[[menu.main]]
  identifier = "about"
  name = "About"
  url = "/about/"
  weight = 30
[[menu.social]]
  name = "GitHub"
  url = "https://github.com/Fabshkiee"
  weight = 10
[[menu.social]]
  name = "LinkedIn"
  url = "https://linkedin.com/in/Fabshkiee"
  weight = 20
```

## 📝 Adding Content

### Blog Posts
Create a new post in the blog directory:
```bash
hugo new blog/my-first-post.md
```
**Front matter example:**
```markdown
---
title: "My First Blog Post"
date: 2026-06-21
tags: ["tech", "coding"]
pinned: true
---
```

### About Section / Timeline
In `content/about.md` (or `content/_index.md`), you can use pure HTML inside your markdown to generate the timeline:
```html
<ul class="timeline">
    <li>
        <span class="year">Present</span>
        <span class="desc">Working on exciting new projects.</span>
    </li>
</ul>
```
