Template Details
Nerdy is a Hugo theme positioned for personal portfolios and blogs. It provides a terminal-style interactive interface for browsing author information, a sidebar that presents the author profile in card form, and support for grouping articles by topic, tag, and series. The theme uses data-driven configuration and offers light and dark appearances.
In terms of usage, Nerdy is imported as a Hugo Module, requires Hugo build statistics to be enabled so Tailwind can discover template-generated class names, and requires installing the npm dependencies needed by the theme's asset pipeline. The repository root is the reusable theme, while the exampleSite/ directory serves as both the online demo and documentation site; the local server runs this example site.
The runtime environment requires Hugo 0.162.1 or newer, Node.js 24 or newer, and npm; using Hugo Modules also requires Go. Local development can be started via npm scripts, by default providing a stable local domain through Portless, or it can bypass Portless and run directly on a local port; build output goes to exampleSite/public/. The repository also provides optional mise tasks.
Is it right for your project?
Use Cases
- Building a personal portfolio site to showcase author information and projects
- Running a personal blog and organizing articles by topic, tag, or series
- Sites that need a terminal-style interactive experience and a card-based author profile
- Hugo projects that want to configure content and appearance in a data-driven way
Suitable For
- Developers using Hugo and familiar with Hugo Modules
- Individuals who need a personal portfolio or blog theme
- Teams comfortable managing frontend dependencies such as Tailwind via npm
- Users who want the example site to also serve as a documentation reference
Getting started & customization
Use these recorded setup notes alongside the repository instructions for your chosen version.
- 1
Hugo version must be 0.162.1 or newer; using Hugo Modules requires Go to be installed.
- 2
Node.js must be version 24 or newer, and the npm dependencies required by the theme's asset pipeline must be installed.
- 3
Import the theme as a Hugo Module and enable build.buildStats in the configuration.
- 4
For local running, prefer npm scripts over calling hugo directly; the scripts first run an in-memory Hugo build to generate hugo_stats.json.
- 5
By default, a local domain is provided through Portless, and the first run may require trusting its local HTTPS certificate; alternatively, use server:local to run directly.
License & source material
Usage conditions & limitations
Free to use · keep license noticeThis entry covers the free version under the MIT license in the public repository; the free scope is the code of this version and does not mean that external services or third-party assets are free.
Must comply with when using
- Free use, modification, commercial use, and distribution of this version's code are permitted.
- When distributing copies or substantial portions of the code, retain the original author's copyright notice and the complete MIT license notice.
- The code is provided as is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.
Additional costs & items to verify
- The theme is designed to be imported as a Hugo Module and must be referenced via module.imports in the site configuration, rather than used by copying files directly.
- Before use, build.buildStats must be enabled in the Hugo configuration; otherwise Tailwind cannot discover template-generated class names and styles may be incomplete.
- The site must install the npm dependencies required by the theme's asset pipeline on its own; importing the theme module alone is not enough.
- Requires Hugo 0.162.1 or newer; versions below this cannot be used.
- Requires Node.js 24 or newer and npm for Tailwind CSS, Portless, and JavaScript dependencies.
- Using Hugo Modules requires a Go environment to be installed.
- Local development by default relies on Portless to provide a stable local domain, and the first run may require trusting its local HTTPS certificate.
- Build and run should use npm scripts rather than calling the hugo command directly; otherwise hugo_stats.json may be missing and style compilation may fail.
- Demo images, fonts, icons, and other third-party assets must be checked against their respective licenses and cannot be judged solely by the code's MIT license.
- External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments, or AI may incur separate charges.

How this score is calculated
Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.
The catalog identifies Hugo as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.

Nerdy is a nerd-vibed Hugo theme for personal portfolios and blogs.
**Live demo and documentation:** <https://nerdy.hugo-themes.com>
The demo site also serves as the documentation site.
## Features
- Nerd-vibed design.
- Interactive terminal for exploring the author.
- Card-style sidebar for an at-a-glance author overview.
- Group posts by subject, topic, and series.
- Data-driven configuration.
- Light and dark theme.
## Requirements
- Hugo `0.162.1` or newer
- Node.js 24 or newer and npm for Tailwind CSS, Portless, and JavaScript dependencies
- Go for Hugo Modules; the example site and recommended install path both use them
- Optional: [mise](https://mise.jdx.dev/) for local tool and task management
## Use the theme
Nerdy is intended to be used as a Hugo Module:
```yaml
module:
imports:
- path: github.com/hugo-themes/nerdy
```
Enable Hugo build stats so Tailwind can discover classes generated by Hugo templates:
```yaml
build:
buildStats:
enable: true
```
Your site also needs the npm dependencies used by the theme's asset pipeline. The dependencies in this repository's `package.json` are the reference set.
For the full setup flow, required data files, and customization options, use the documentation posts at <https://nerdy.hugo-themes.com>.
## Run locally
Clone the repository and run the bundled example site:
```sh
git clone https://github.com/hugo-themes/nerdy.git
cd nerdy
npm install
npm run server
```
Then open <https://nerdy.localhost>.
[Portless](https://portless.sh/) is installed as a development dependency and provides the stable local DNS name. On first run, it may ask to trust its local HTTPS certificate. If your browser still marks the page as not secure, run `npm run portless:trust`, restart the browser, and open `https://nerdy.localhost` again.
If `https://nerdy.localhost` shows a Portless 404, stop any stale Portless proxy with `portless proxy stop`, then run `npm run server` again. If the proxy was started with elevated privileges, use `sudo portless proxy stop` once before restarting.
To bypass Portless and run Hugo directly instead:
```sh
npm run server:local
```
Then open <http://localhost:1313>.
The repository root contains the reusable theme. The demo and documentation site lives in `exampleSite/` and is what the local server runs.
## Build locally
```sh
npm run build
```
The generated site is written to `exampleSite/public/`.
Use the npm scripts instead of calling `hugo` directly. They add `node_modules/.bin` to `PATH` and run a lightweight in-memory Hugo pass first so `hugo_stats.json` exists before Tailwind compiles the final stylesheet.
## npm scripts
| Command | Description |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| `npm run server` | Start the example/documentation site through Portless at `https://nerdy.localhost`. |
| `npm run dev` | Alias for `npm run server`. |
| `npm run server:local` | Start the example/documentation site directly on `http://localhost:1313`. |
| `npm run build` | Build the production example/documentation site. |
## Optional mise workflow
If you use mise, the repository includes matching tasks:
```sh
mise install
mise run server
mise run build
```
`mise run server` uses the same Portless-backed flow as `npm run server`. Use `mise run server-local` to bypass Portless and serve directly on `http://localhost:1313`.
The mise tasks install npm dependencies automatically before running server or build commands.
## Project layout
- `layouts/` - theme templates and partials
- `assets/` - CSS, JavaScript, icons, and images processed by Hugo Pipes
- `exampleSite/` - live demo, documentation posts, sample content, and sample data
- `package.json` - Tailwind, Alpine.js, and local development scripts
