Template Details

My Scholar is an Astro theme for academic personal homepages, research blogs, project showcases, and publication lists, and can also be used for lab sites. It follows a static-first, Markdown-first build approach, with generic demo content included in the repository that researchers can replace with their own materials. Content types cover academic bios, projects, updates, blog posts, authors, and publications; publications are rendered from BibTeX files. On the writing side, it supports Sätteri, callouts, math formulas, code highlighting, heading anchors, and sidenotes, and the blog includes subposts, tags, stages, table of contents, share actions, and multiple authors. The site includes built-in sitemap, robots.txt, Open Graph metadata, and social image generation. Styling uses native CSS with minimal interactive scripts; the icon system supports both local and Iconify sources; configuration and content schemas are type-validated with Zod. The theme is built on astro-erudite v2.0.1 and references Maggie Appleton's digital garden and al-folio. The default static build does not require a UI framework or server adapter; integrations can be added via Astro's add command.

Usage conditions & limitations

Free to use · keep license notice

This listing covers the free version in the public repository under the Apache-2.0 license; the free scope is the code of that version and does not mean external services or third-party assets are free.

Must comply with when using

  • Free use, modification, commercial use, and distribution are permitted; the Apache-2.0 license must be included when distributing.
  • Modified files must be prominently marked as changed, and relevant copyright, patent, trademark, and attribution notices must be retained.
  • If the original project includes a NOTICE file, applicable attribution notices in it must be retained when distributing derivative works.
  • The license includes an applicable contributor patent grant; initiating patent litigation as described in the license terminates that patent grant, and no trademark use rights are granted.
  • The code is provided as-is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.

Additional costs & items to verify

  • Demo images, fonts, icons, and other third-party assets must be checked against their respective licenses and cannot be judged solely by the code's Apache-2.0 license.
  • External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments, or AI may incur additional fees.

How this score is calculated

Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.

The catalog identifies Astro as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.

## Getting Started

Have Node.js `>=22.12.0` and pnpm installed. Create a site directly from the
GitHub starter:

```bash
pnpm create astro@latest --template mychiffonn/astro-scholar
```

Astro's wizard asks for the destination, installs dependencies, and can
initialize Git. See Astro's official
[install and starter-template guide](https://docs.astro.build/en/install-and-setup/#use-a-theme-or-starter-template)
for branch and repository URL options.

Then:

1. Start the development server with `pnpm dev`.
2. Visit <http://localhost:4321>.
3. Follow [docs/INSTALL.md](docs/INSTALL.md) to configure the starter.
4. Personalize content and design with
   [docs/CUSTOMIZATION.md](docs/CUSTOMIZATION.md).

To contribute to the theme itself, clone this repository and run
`corepack enable && pnpm install`.

## Astro and AI-assisted development

Astro's [Build with AI guide](https://docs.astro.build/en/guides/build-with-ai/)
explains how to give coding agents current Astro documentation instead of
relying on potentially stale framework knowledge. This repository also includes
[AGENTS.md](AGENTS.md) with the theme's installation, customization,
development, validation, and publishing conventions.

For supported adapters and integrations, use Astro's setup command:

```bash
pnpm astro add <integration>
```

The command installs the package and updates `astro.config.ts`. Read the
[Astro integrations guide](https://docs.astro.build/en/guides/integrations/)
and the selected integration's documentation first; the theme does not require
a UI framework or server adapter for its default static build.

## Built With

This theme is built on enscribe's
[astro-erudite](https://github.com/jktrn/astro-erudite) v2.0.1, and references
from [Maggie Appleton](https://github.com/MaggieAppleton/maggieappleton.com-V3)'s
digital garden and al-folio.

## Development

- [DEVELOPMENT.md](DEVELOPMENT.md): architecture, commands, Erudite v2
  principles, and theme publishing checklist.
- [CONTRIBUTING.md](CONTRIBUTING.md): contribution workflow and pull request
  expectations.

pnpm lint
pnpm lint:styles
pnpm test:markdown
pnpm astro check
