Template Details

This repository provides five portfolio website templates, all using vanilla HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with no build step, framework or dependencies. Each template includes five sections: About, Skills, Experience, Projects and Contact, but their appearance and interaction differ markedly: Sidebar uses a fixed sidebar and a typewriter-style hero, with light and dark modes; Terminal presents content as a command line where visitors type commands such as help, about and skills; Bold uses oversized type and six color themes; Notebook mimics a Jupyter notebook, with each section "running" as a code cell on load; Desktop simulates an operating system desktop with windows that can be dragged, minimized and maximized.

Customization varies by template: for templates 2 through 5, content is centralized in a DATA object at the top of script.js; template 1 requires editing index.html directly. Themes and wallpapers for templates 3 and 5 are controlled by the THEMES and WALLS lists in script.js, while template 1 uses CSS variables at the top of style.css. Skill counts and relationship graphs in templates 4 and 5 are calculated from project tags, and tag names must match skill names.

The contact form uses Web3Forms, so you need to obtain your own access key and replace the placeholder; template 2 has no form and only provides an email address and links. Templates can be deployed for free via GitHub Pages. Known limitations include: cursor effects work only on desktop and are disabled on touch devices; the "Python kernel" and CSV files in template 4 are only a visual theme and do not actually run Python; project covers in templates 3, 4 and 5 are generated images, not real screenshots; and the templates have not undergone a formal accessibility audit or testing across all browsers and devices. The repository uses the MIT license, so it can be used, modified and shared for free, but third-party assets such as demo images, fonts and icons require separate license checks.

Is it right for your project?

Use Cases

  • An individual developer or designer needs a static portfolio website with no build step
  • You want to present personal information and projects through different interaction styles such as a command line, notebook or desktop operating system
  • Host a multi-template demo site for free on GitHub Pages, or copy one template as a personal homepage
  • Use it as a reference project for learning vanilla HTML, CSS and JavaScript interaction implementations

Suitable For

  • Front-end developers who want to quickly build a static portfolio without introducing a framework or build tool
  • Individual users who need multiple visual style options and are willing to replace placeholder content and screenshots themselves
  • Showcase projects interested in command-line, Jupyter notebook or desktop operating system-style interactions

Getting started & customization

Use these recorded setup notes alongside the repository instructions for your chosen version.

  1. 1

    After cloning the repository, open any template's index.html directly in a browser, or serve it locally with python -m http.server 8000

  2. 2

    For templates 2 through 5, edit the DATA object at the top of script.js; for template 1, edit index.html directly, and the typewriter phrases are in the words list in script.js

  3. 3

    The contact form uses Web3Forms; obtain an access key at web3forms.com and replace YOUR_ACCESS_KEY; template 2 has no form

  4. 4

    Skill counts and relationship graphs in templates 4 and 5 depend on project tags; tag names must match skill names (case-insensitive), otherwise counts are zero

  5. 5

    To deploy to GitHub Pages, in the repository Settings → Pages, select Deploy from a branch, the main branch and the / (root) directory

Usage conditions & limitations

Free to use · keep license notice

This listing covers the free version in a public repository under the MIT license; the free scope is the code in this version and does not mean external services or third-party assets are free.

Must comply with when using

  • You may use, modify, commercially use and distribute the code in this version for free.
  • When distributing copies or substantial portions of the code, retain the original author's copyright notice and the full MIT license notice.
  • The code is provided as is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.

Additional costs & items to verify

  • Demo images, fonts, icons and other third-party assets require checking under their respective licenses; they cannot be judged solely by the code's MIT license.
  • External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments or AI may incur separate charges.
  • The contact form relies on the third-party service Web3Forms; you must register at web3forms.com, obtain an access key and replace the YOUR_ACCESS_KEY placeholder in the code before submissions can be received properly.
  • Before using the contact form, you must apply for a Web3Forms access key yourself, which is an external service account requirement.
  • Fonts are loaded online from Google Fonts and fall back to system fonts when offline; if you need fully offline or self-hosted fonts, you must handle that yourself.
  • The cursor interaction effects in templates 3, 4 and 5 work only on desktop and are automatically disabled on touch devices.
  • The "Python kernel" and CSV files in template 4 are only a visual theme and do not actually execute Python code.
  • Project covers in templates 3, 4 and 5 are generated images rather than real screenshots; replacing them with actual project screenshots is recommended.
  • The templates have not undergone a formal accessibility audit and have not been tested on all browsers and devices; verify them yourself before publishing.
  • The project was AI-assisted and then reviewed and tested by the author; reusers should test on their own devices before publishing.

How this score is calculated

Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.

The catalog identifies HTML as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.

# Portfolio Templates

Five free, responsive portfolio website templates built with plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript. No build step, no framework, no dependencies. Edit one data block, open `index.html`, and you have a portfolio.

Each template has the same five sections: **About, Skills, Experience, Projects, Contact**, but a very different look and feel.

## What each template does

1. **Sidebar:** fixed sidebar with navigation, a typewriter hero over a generated dot-grid background, a timeline, project cards, and light/dark mode that remembers the visitor's choice.
2. **Terminal:** visitors type commands (`help`, `about`, `skills`, `projects`, `experience`, `contact`). It has Tab completion, command history, four colour themes, quick-command buttons for phones, and a plain "Classic view" for people who just want to read.
3. **Bold:** an oversized name whose letters react to the cursor on desktop, a skills marquee, project rows with a floating preview, and six full colour themes the visitor can switch between.
4. **Notebook:** each section is a code cell that "runs" on load. Skills show as a graph linking each skill to the projects that use it, projects are cards with generated cover art, and a neural-network background reacts to the cursor.
5. **Desktop:** an operating-system style page. Open About, Skills, Experience, Projects and Contact from the dock or menu bar, drag, minimise and maximise windows, and pick one of four wallpapers.

## Quick start

```bash
git clone https://github.com/Omkar210404/portfolio-templates.git
cd portfolio-templates
```

Open any template's `index.html` in a browser. To serve it locally instead:

```bash
python -m http.server 8000
# then visit http://localhost:8000/template-3-bold/
```

## Customise a template

- **Templates 2 to 5:** all content lives in one `DATA` object at the top of `script.js` (name, about, skills, experience, projects, contact). Edit the text there. You do not need to touch the HTML or CSS.
- **Template 1:** edit the text directly in `index.html`. The typewriter phrases are the `words` list near the top of `script.js`.
- **Colours and themes:** Template 3 has a `THEMES` list and Template 5 has a `WALLS` list in `script.js`. Template 1 uses CSS variables at the top of `style.css`.
- **Placeholder text:** every template ships with neutral placeholder content ("Your Name", "Project One", `[email protected]`). Replace all of it with your own real details, and only list real experience and projects.

### Skill counts and graphs

In Templates 4 and 5, the numbers and graph links on skills are calculated from your projects' `tags`. Keep tag names the same as your skill names (case does not matter), or the counts will show zero.

## Contact form

The forms use [Web3Forms](https://web3forms.com), which is free and needs no server.

1. Get an access key at web3forms.com.
2. Replace `YOUR_ACCESS_KEY`: in `index.html` for Templates 1 and 3, and in `script.js` (`contact.accessKey`) for Templates 4 and 5. Template 2 has no form, only email and links.

Never commit a key you want to keep private. A Web3Forms key is designed to be used in public pages, but you can restrict it to your domain in their dashboard.

## Deploy for free with GitHub Pages

1. Push this repo to GitHub.
2. Go to **Settings → Pages**.
3. Under **Build and deployment**, choose **Deploy from a branch**, select `main` and `/ (root)`, and save.
4. Your templates will be live at `https://<your-username>.github.io/portfolio-templates/template-1-sidebar/` and so on.

To use one as your own portfolio, copy that template's three files into a repo named `<your-username>.github.io`.

## Tech

- HTML, CSS and vanilla JavaScript only
- Google Fonts (loaded from the internet; each template falls back to a system font if offline)
- No frameworks, no build tools, no tracking
- Respects the `prefers-reduced-motion` setting, uses visible keyboard focus styles, and adapts to phones and tablets

## Known limitations

- Cursor effects (Templates 3, 4 and 5) are desktop-only and switch off on touch devices.
- Template 4's "Python kernel" and the CSV files in its code cells are a visual theme only. Nothing actually runs Python.
- Project cover images in Templates 3, 4 and 5 are generated artwork, not screenshots. Replace them with real screenshots of your work if you can.
- The templates have not been through a formal accessibility audit or testing on every browser and device.
