Template Details

martial-paper is a theme written by pedrodude for the Hugo static-site generator, positioned as minimalist, smart, and paper-like. Its visual inspiration comes from right-angle shapes and the default color scheme of "Starry Night Over the Rhône." The README mentions a former live site using the theme, socratic.space, but it is offline; the only available reference now is a screenshot in the repository.

The theme provides site-level configuration through config.toml params, including aboutpage, author, copyrightstatement, description, siteclass, and tagline; siteclass and tagline are optional and are used to display a contrasting subtitle and tagline on the homepage. To add introductory text to the homepage, you need to create a Markdown document in the content directory with frontmatter containing timeless = "indexintro" and title = "indexintro"; the README notes that this content should not be too long, to avoid pushing the homepage index too far down.

Page-level configuration extends several fields in the archetype: streamtitle displays a contrasting subtitle on a single page; timeless set to true hides the article summary and the date in the title; suppress set to true hides the page from the homepage index; martialpaperlastmod accepts the YYYYMMDD format and displays the last modified date below the footer. That value is not updated or formatted automatically, and when unset the creation date is shown.

For styling, the CSS is adapted from HTML5 Boilerplate, mainly uses flexbox for positioning, and has color adjustments; for fonts, geometric sans-serifs, monospace fonts, and even bold serifs can be paired. The default configuration uses the Montserrat font hosted by Google Fonts. The theme also depends on a trimmed version of Normalize.css. The repository was last updated in 2018, the README provides no online demo, and the installation steps point to Hugo's official theme installation instructions.

Is it right for your project?

Use Cases

  • Personal blogs or documentation sites looking for a minimalist paper-style theme for a Hugo site
  • Content sites that need per-page control over date display, hiding from the homepage index, or last modified dates
  • Hugo projects that want to adjust CSS colors themselves based on HTML5 Boilerplate and flexbox

Suitable For

  • Site authors using Hugo who prefer a minimalist paper-like visual style
  • Users willing to manually edit config.toml and page frontmatter to complete configuration
  • Developers who accept that the theme was last updated in 2018 and need to verify compatibility themselves

Getting started & customization

Use these recorded setup notes alongside the repository instructions for your chosen version.

  1. 1

    For installation steps, refer to Hugo's official theme installation instructions: place the theme in the themes directory and set theme = "martial-paper" in the configuration

  2. 2

    Modify all settings in config.toml that start with TK and remove the TK prefix, including baseurl, title, and params such as aboutpage, author, copyrightstatement, and description

  3. 3

    aboutpage must be filled in with the exact name of the about page file without its extension; otherwise the about link in the header will not work

  4. 4

    If you need homepage introductory text, create a Markdown document in the content directory with frontmatter containing timeless = "indexintro" and title = "indexintro"

  5. 5

    martialpaperlastmod must be filled in manually in YYYYMMDD format; it is not updated or formatted automatically

Usage conditions & limitations

Free to use · keep license notice

This entry covers the free version in the public repository under the MIT license; the free scope is the code for that version and does not mean external services or third-party assets are free.

Must comply with when using

  • You may use, modify, commercialize, and distribute the code for this version free of charge.
  • When distributing copies or substantial portions of the code, retain the original author's copyright notice and the complete MIT license notice.
  • The code is provided as is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.

Additional costs & items to verify

  • Demo images, fonts, icons, and other third-party assets must be checked against their respective licenses; they cannot be judged solely by the code's MIT license.
  • External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments, or AI may incur separate charges.
  • The default configuration loads the Montserrat font through Google Fonts, which is an external service dependency; in offline or restricted-network environments, you need to replace the font or host the font files yourself.
  • The theme CSS is adapted from HTML5 Boilerplate and includes a trimmed version of Normalize.css; these third-party code portions may carry their own license terms, which you need to check yourself.
  • The original online demo site in the README is offline; there is currently no accessible online demo, so only the screenshot in the repository can be referenced.
  • martialpaperlastmod must be filled in manually in YYYYMMDD format; it is not updated or formatted automatically, and when unset the creation date is shown.

===============================

A minimalist, smart, paper theme.

The theme was inspired by the right-angle and the default colours by Starry Night Over the Rhone.

## Installation

Generic installation instructions are [here](https://gohugo.io/themes/installing/)

## Setup

### Site configuration

Change the bits of the following config.toml file that start with TK (and get rid of the TK)

---
```toml
#Adjust all settings that start with TK to customise this theme to your site.  Also remove the TK
theme = "martial-paper"
baseurl = "TK http://mysite.com"
languageCode = "en-us"
title = "TK MY SITE'S TITLE"
[params]
  aboutpage = "TK name-of-the-about-post" #This makes the "about" link in the header function.  It must be the exact filename of your about page without the file extension.  E.g. if your about page is called "mysiteabout.md" then enter in "mysiteabout"
  author = "TK Your Name" #Goes in the meta info of your webpage to help identify you as the author of the content
  copyrightstatement = "TK A copyright statement of your choosing." #Will appear in the footer of each page.
  description = "TK A description that will appear in the html meta" #Goes in the meta info of your webpage to describe the content of your site
  siteclass = "TK MY SITE'S SUBTITLE" #Optional.  If you set it, it will display a subtitle in a contrasting color (adjustable within the CSS) on the site's index page.
  tagline = "TK My site's witty tagline" #Optional.  If you set it, it will display a tagline for the website underneath the titles.  By default it appears italicized.
```
---

### Indexintro.md

To add in some introductory spiel to the index page, create a markdown document in your content folder with the following in your toml frontmatter:
```toml
timeless = "indexintro"
title = "indexintro"
```
To keep things simple there's no repositioning of the page index; so perhaps keep this bit short so as not to push the index too far down the page.

### CSS

The CSS is adapted from [HTML5 Boilerplate](https://html5boilerplate.com/). The theme mainly makes use of flexbox for positioning, with some color tweaks. In terms of font choice: geometric sans-serifs, monospace, and perhaps even slab serifs all seem to work fine.

### Individual page configuration

Page configuration is largely unchanged from the default but there are some additional bits in the archetype (the template that defines default page settings) which enable additional features. It's explained in the comments in the template for your page frontmatter below.

---
```toml
+++
streamtitle="" #Optional.  If you set it, it will display a subtitle in a contrasting color (adjustable within the CSS) on the individual page.
timeless = "false" #Optional.  If you set it, it will determine whether the post displays date features (displaying a date on the post summary on the index page, date in the page title).  Changing the value to true suppresses all of these features, with the exception of the last modified date shown by the pedrolastmod parameter
suppress = "false"  If set to true, the page will be suppressed from display on the index page
draft=true
martialpaperlastmod="YYYYMMDD" #Optional.  If you set it, it will display a Last Modified Date under the footer.  This is not automated at all, nor formatted, but simply provides a basic ability to indicate that the creation date differs from the modified date.  If left unchanged, it will display the created date.
## Dependencies (and acknowledgements)
### HTML5 Boilerplate [and Normalize.css]
An excellent starting point.  Actually the minified version of Normalize.css; apparently we are preferring robots to humans now...
### Hugo
Very easy.  Everyone should learn HTML, CSS, and then this.
### Google Fonts
The default configuration uses a rather nice geometric sans-serif font called [Montserrat](https://www.google.com/fonts/specimen/Montserrat) hosted by Google Fonts.
---
And the name?  I had a moment where I thought it looked like official paper that you might find in a military office... [^1].  And yes I know that's rubbish, but I thought about it for like 2 seconds; give me a break.
[^1]: The red version did, and the red is in the CSS if you prefer.
