What stands out

A quick read of the recorded project description.

01

Run the CLI via npx, pnpm dlx, yarn dlx, or bunx to generate a project interactively or with parameters

02

Offers two templates: default (single agent + calculator/weather tools) and handoffs (triage routing to math-specialist, weather-specialist)

03

The same /api/agent route supports both standard JSON responses and SSE streaming responses

04

Tool boundaries are validated with Zod, and the agent execution layer is separated from the route handler

05

The generated project includes PRODUCTION_GUIDE.md covering auth, rate limiting, persistent sessions, and monitoring patterns

06

The CLI supports options such as --pm, --install/--skip-install, --no-git, --no-telemetry

Template Details

This repository is the CLI tool for @bixai/create-agent-sdk-starter, used to quickly generate a Next.js 16 App Router + OpenAI Agents SDK starter application locally. The README states that the generated project includes: the app/api/agent/route.ts route, agent definitions under the agents directory, a runtime isolation layer at runtime/agentRunner.ts, Zod-validated calculator and weather tools under the tools directory, and PRODUCTION_GUIDE.md. The API route supports both standard JSON responses and SSE streaming responses (toggled via the ?stream=true query parameter). The CLI supports both interactive and parameter-based usage, allowing you to specify the project name, template, package manager, whether to install dependencies, whether to initialize git, and to disable anonymous telemetry via --no-telemetry.

The README does not provide UI details, component implementations, performance data, or steps for deploying to specific platforms for the generated app; the screenshots in previews only indicate the existence of desktop and mobile previews and do not represent page functionality. The README also does not list specific version numbers in the dependency list, only stating that Node.js 20.9+ is required (a requirement of Next.js 16.x).

Next.jsStarter

Is it right for your project?

Use Cases

  • Need to quickly set up a Next.js starter project based on the OpenAI Agents SDK
  • Want to prototype and compare single-agent and multi-agent handoffs organization
  • Need to experiment with both JSON and SSE response forms on the same route
  • Want to start from tool definitions with Zod validation as the boundary of agent capabilities

Suitable For

  • Developers using Node.js 20.9+ and familiar with one of npm/pnpm/yarn/bun
  • Teams needing a starter template combining Next.js App Router and OpenAI Agents SDK
  • Developers who want to start from the CLI scaffold and then add production configuration according to PRODUCTION_GUIDE.md

Getting started & customization

Use these recorded setup notes alongside the repository instructions for your chosen version.

  1. 1

    Node.js 20.9+ is required; package managers can be npm, pnpm, yarn, or bun

  2. 2

    Run npx @bixai/create-agent-sdk-starter (or the corresponding dlx/bunx form for your package manager), and follow the prompts to enter the project name, package manager, and whether to install dependencies

  3. 3

    After generation, copy .env.local.example to .env.local and fill in OPENAI_API_KEY; optionally override variables such as OPENAI_MODEL

  4. 4

    Start the development server with npm run dev / pnpm dev / yarn dev / bun run dev, then test the JSON and SSE requests to /api/agent via curl

  5. 5

    The README does not provide steps for deploying to specific platforms; production-related configuration should refer to PRODUCTION_GUIDE.md within the generated project

Usage conditions & limitations

Free to use · keep license notice

This entry covers the free version under the MIT license in the public repository; the free scope is the code of this version and does not imply that external services or third-party assets are free.

Must comply with when using

  • Free use, modification, commercial use, and distribution of this version's code are permitted.
  • When distributing copies or substantial portions of the code, retain the original author's copyright notice and the full MIT license notice.
  • The code is provided as is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.

Additional costs & items to verify

  • Demo images, fonts, icons, and other third-party assets must be checked against their respective licenses; they cannot be judged solely by the code's MIT license.
  • External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments, or AI may incur additional charges.
  • After generating the project, you must copy .env.local.example to .env.local and fill in your own OPENAI_API_KEY to call the OpenAI Agents SDK.
  • A valid OPENAI_API_KEY (sk-...) must be provided as an environment variable; otherwise, agent functionality cannot be used.
  • The runtime requires Node.js 20.9+ (a requirement of Next.js 16.x); versions below this cannot be used.
  • The CLI collects anonymous usage telemetry by default; it can be disabled via --no-telemetry or by setting BIXAI_TELEMETRY=0 / DO_NOT_TRACK=1.
  • Production auth, rate limiting, persistent sessions, and monitoring must be implemented by referring to PRODUCTION_GUIDE.md within the generated project; the scaffold itself does not include these production configurations.

How this score is calculated

Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.

The catalog identifies Next.js as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.

If this helps you ship agent apps faster, consider giving it a ⭐ [star on GitHub](https://github.com/soummyaanon/bixai-nextjs-agentsdk-statter-kit)!

---

## What you get

- **Next.js 16 App Router** — baseline project, no cruft
- **OpenAI Agents SDK** — integrated and configured out of the box
- **Tool-first architecture** — typed tool boundaries with Zod validation
- **Dual transport** — standard JSON responses and SSE streaming on the same route
- **Live agent indicator** — the UI shows which agent is active, including across handoffs
- **Runtime isolation** — agent execution layer is separate from route handlers
- **Multiple templates** — `default` (single agent + tools) and `handoffs` (triage → specialists)
- **Production guide** — auth, rate limiting, persistent sessions, and monitoring patterns included

---

## Requirements

- **Node.js `20.9+`** — required by Next.js 16.x
- Any of: `npm`, `pnpm`, `yarn`, or `bun`

---

## Quick start

```bash
npx @bixai/create-agent-sdk-starter
# Prompts for:
#   - project name  (e.g. my-agent-app)
#   - package manager  (npm / pnpm / yarn / bun)
#   - install dependencies now  (Y/n)
cd my-agent-app
cp .env.local.example .env.local   # add your OPENAI_API_KEY
npm run dev
```

## Create a new app

```bash
# npm
npx @bixai/create-agent-sdk-starter
# pnpm
pnpm dlx @bixai/create-agent-sdk-starter
# yarn
yarn dlx @bixai/create-agent-sdk-starter
# bun
bunx @bixai/create-agent-sdk-starter
```

**Skip the prompt** by passing the project name directly:

```bash
npx @bixai/create-agent-sdk-starter my-app
```

**Install globally** and reuse:

```bash
npm install -g @bixai/create-agent-sdk-starter
create-agent-sdk-starter
```

---

## CLI reference

```
create-agent-sdk-starter [project-name] [options]
```

| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| `project-name` | Target directory name. Prompts interactively if omitted. |
| `-t, --template <name>` | Template to scaffold: `default` or `handoffs`. Default: `default`. |
| `-y, --yes` | Skip prompts and use sensible defaults (pnpm, install, git init). |
| `--pm <manager>` | Package manager: `pnpm`, `npm`, `yarn`, or `bun`. |
| `--install` / `--skip-install` | Force install or skip install of dependencies. |
| `--no-git` | Skip the initial `git init` + commit. |
| `--no-telemetry` | Disable anonymous usage telemetry (also via `BIXAI_TELEMETRY=0` or `DO_NOT_TRACK=1`). |
| `-V, --version` | Print the CLI version. |

**Templates**

| Template | What it ships |
|---|---|
| `default` | Single-agent starter — `mainAgent` plus calculator and weather tools. |
| `handoffs` | Multi-agent starter — `triageAgent` routes to `math-specialist` and `weather-specialist` via the SDK's `handoffs` feature. |

**Examples**

```bash
# Scripted, no prompts, npm, skip install
npx @bixai/create-agent-sdk-starter my-app -y --pm npm --skip-install
# Multi-agent handoffs template
npx @bixai/create-agent-sdk-starter my-handoffs-app --template handoffs -y
```

- Fails early if the target directory already exists
- Interactive mode (no flags, no project name) prompts for package manager and install
- `-y` defaults to pnpm + install + git init
- Automatically renames `gitignore` → `.gitignore` post-copy
- Drops lockfiles that don't match the chosen package manager
- Initializes a git repo with an initial commit unless `--no-git` is passed

## Configure

Copy `.env.local.example` to `.env.local` and add your key:

```bash
OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-...
# Optional overrides
# OPENAI_MODEL=gpt-4o-mini
# AGENTS_TRACING_DISABLED=true
# AGENTS_TRACE_INCLUDE_SENSITIVE_DATA=false
# AGENT_LOCAL_SESSION_TTL_MS=1800000
# AGENT_MAX_LOCAL_SESSIONS=200
```

Then start the dev server:

```bash
npm run dev        # npm
pnpm dev           # pnpm
yarn dev           # yarn
bun run dev        # bun
```

---

## Test the API

**Standard (JSON) request:**

```bash
curl -X POST http://localhost:3000/api/agent \
  -H "content-type: application/json" \
  -d '{"message":"What is 42 multiplied by 13?"}'
```

**Streaming (SSE) request:**

```bash
curl -N -X POST "http://localhost:3000/api/agent?stream=true" \
  -H "content-type: application/json" \
  -d '{"message":"Explain binary search in 5 lines"}'
```

See `PRODUCTION_GUIDE.md` in the generated project for auth, rate limiting, persistent sessions, and monitoring.

## Troubleshooting

**`npx` fails on older Node** — Upgrade to Node.js `20.9+` and retry.

**npm README is stale** — npm renders the README bundled at publish time. Updates require a new package version.

**macOS `EPERM` under `~/.npm`** — Fix permissions:

```bash
sudo chown -R "$(id -u)":"$(id -g)" ~/.npm
```
