Template Details
Dumbarton is a Jekyll theme developed by Tyler Butler, positioned for academic users. The home page has a simple structure: an about me introduction, a blog entry point, and an interactive highlights section for describing publications, coursework, courses taught, and projects. The interface is built with Bootstrap and Animate CSS.
The theme is configured centrally through _config.yml. Site settings include the home page avatar profile_image and social links (such as twitter), used to generate the navigation bar and footer links; blog settings include tags (space-separated, used to generate the blog page tag component) and comments (based on gitalk, marked in the README as currently unavailable). Theme settings provide a ui-theme color scheme switch, and new entries can be added in _data/themes.yml to customize navigation colors, fonts, font sizes, buttons, and highlight section colors; nav-dIcon controls the mobile navigation dropdown icon, animate controls the home page loading animation toggle, and home_option switches the section below about me on the home page, with the README noting that currently only the education option is available. There are also help_tips (a home page popup for demonstration only), font_awesome_id (the Font Awesome account ID required for navigation bar icons), a set of optional search engine and social platform verification meta tags, and a favicon located at /assets/img/icons.
The publications page and the home page publication display section rely on the jekyll-scholar plugin, with configuration options including style (such as apa), language, bibliography directory, and bib file name. The README explicitly states that because GitHub Pages does not support jekyll-scholar, the theme is currently incompatible with GitHub Pages.
Installation involves cloning the repository, installing dependencies with Bundler, and running jekyll serve to start the local development server; after modifying _config.yml, the development server must be stopped and restarted to see the changes. The code is under the MIT license, and third-party assets such as demo images, fonts, and icons must be checked separately under their respective licenses.
Is it right for your project?
Use Cases
- Build a personal academic homepage to centrally display bio, publications, and teaching information
- Write a blog with Jekyll and organize posts using the tag component
- List publications, coursework, courses taught, and projects interactively on the home page
- Adjust the appearance of navigation, fonts, and highlight sections through custom color schemes
Suitable For
- Academics who need to display publications, courses, and projects
- Users who use Jekyll and deploy it themselves (not on GitHub Pages)
- Users who want to adjust appearance and content through configuration files rather than changing code
Getting started & customization
Use these recorded setup notes alongside the repository instructions for your chosen version.
- 1
After cloning the repository, run bundle install to install dependencies, then use bundle exec jekyll serve to start the local development server
- 2
After modifying _config.yml, the development server must be stopped and restarted for changes to take effect
- 3
The publications feature depends on jekyll-scholar, and the scholar-related options must be configured according to the official documentation
- 4
GitHub Pages does not support jekyll-scholar, so the theme currently cannot be deployed on GitHub Pages
- 5
Font Awesome icons in the navigation bar require registering a free account at fontawesome.com to obtain font_awesome_id
License & source material
Usage conditions & limitations
Free to use · keep license noticeThis entry covers the free version under the MIT license in the public repository; the free scope is the code of this version and does not mean that external services or third-party assets are free.
Must comply with when using
- Free use, modification, commercial use, and distribution of this version's code are permitted.
- When distributing copies or substantial portions of the code, retain the original author's copyright notice and the full MIT license notice.
- The code is provided as is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.
Additional costs & items to verify
- The theme is incompatible with GitHub Pages because GitHub Pages does not support the jekyll-scholar plugin, so it cannot be deployed directly on GitHub Pages.
- Font Awesome icons in the navigation bar require registering a free account at fontawesome.com and obtaining font_awesome_id to generate correctly.
- The blog comment feature is based on gitalk, and the README explicitly marks it as currently unavailable, so it cannot be enabled.
- The home_option setting for the section below about me on the home page currently only has the education option available; other options are unavailable.
- help_tips is for demonstration purposes only; when enabled, it pops up a window on the home page introducing theme information.
- Demo images, fonts, icons, and other third-party assets must be checked under their respective licenses and cannot be judged solely by the code's MIT license.
- External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments, or AI may incur additional charges.

How this score is calculated
Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.
The catalog identifies Jekyll as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.
