Template Details

eleventy-chapbook is an Eleventy starter for building chaptered literary websites, targeting serialized fiction, novellas, and other long-form prose. It separates content from presentation: all work content lives in the content/ directory, which can be moved wholesale between templates in the same series (eleventy-pamphlet, eleventy-folio), so changing templates changes the appearance without touching the text.

For multi-chapter works, place Markdown files in content/chapters/, with each file defining its title and order via front matter; order determines the sequence in the table of contents and previous/next chapter navigation, falling back to 999 when missing, then sorting by filename for determinism. The filename determines the URL, e.g., ch04-the-storm.md maps to /chapters/ch04-the-storm/. Chapter pages have a numbered header and previous/next chapter navigation. If the work is a single page, simply delete the content/chapters/ directory; index.md then becomes the entire work, inheriting the base layout without chapter navigation or a table of contents.

The homepage content/index.md renders free-form Markdown/HTML above the chapter list, suitable for an epigraph, preface, or dedication; content/about.md is for version notes and acknowledgments. Site metadata (title, site name, URL, language, description, author) is centralized in content/_data/metadata.js, keeping the content/ directory self-contained.

Typography and color are controlled via CSS custom properties at the top of css/index.css, including serif font, sans-serif font, background color, body text color, muted color, link color, and border color; changing these variables changes the theme. The template defaults to Adobe Fonts' p22-stickley-pro-text and neue-kabel, with the font kit ID written in _includes/layouts/base.njk; changing fonts requires replacing the Typekit link and updating the CSS variables accordingly.

Markdown rendering is configured with html: true, allowing HTML directly in Markdown, and provides several literary typography styles: drop cap (class="drop"), scene heading (rendered as h4), character voice heading (rendered as h3), and section break (rendered as h2).

The project structure includes content/ (_data, index.md, about.md, chapters/), _includes/layouts/ (base.njk, home.njk, chapter.njk), and css/index.css. npm scripts provide a development server (0.0.0.0:8082, with live reload), a production build to _site/, and a build with debug output. The repository includes a GitHub Actions workflow that builds and deploys to GitHub Pages on pushes to main, automatically detecting the repository name to set the path prefix.

Usage limitations: the template relies on an Adobe Fonts font kit; without replacing the font link, font licensing and availability depend on that service; third-party assets such as demo images, fonts, and icons must be checked against their respective licenses, and the code's MIT license does not cover these assets; external services such as domains and hosting may incur separate charges.

Getting started & customization

Use these recorded setup notes alongside the repository instructions for your chosen version.

  1. 1

    After cloning the repository, run npm install, then npm run start to launch the development server, defaulting to http://localhost:8082

  2. 2

    Edit site title, author, URL, and other information in content/_data/metadata.js

  3. 3

    Place chapter files in content/chapters/, providing title and order in front matter

  4. 4

    The template defaults to Adobe Fonts' p22-stickley-pro-text and neue-kabel; changing fonts requires modifying the Typekit link in _includes/layouts/base.njk and updating the font variables in css/index.css

  5. 5

    Third-party fonts, images, and icons must have their licenses checked separately; the MIT license covers only the code itself

Usage conditions & limitations

Free to use · keep license notice

This entry covers the free version under the MIT license in the public repository; the free scope is that version's code and does not mean external services or third-party assets are free.

Must comply with when using

  • You may use, modify, commercialize, and distribute this version's code for free.
  • When distributing copies or substantial portions of the code, retain the original author's copyright notice and the full MIT license notice.
  • The code is provided as is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.

Additional costs & items to verify

  • The template defaults to Adobe Fonts' p22-stickley-pro-text and neue-kabel, with the font kit ID written in _includes/layouts/base.njk. Using these fonts depends on the Adobe Fonts service and compliance with its licensing; if the Typekit link is not replaced, font availability and licensing depend on that third-party service.
  • Changing fonts requires replacing the Typekit link in _includes/layouts/base.njk and updating the font variables in css/index.css; otherwise the site will still load Adobe Fonts resources.
  • The built-in deployment workflow relies on GitHub Pages, triggering a build and publish on pushes to the main branch; using this deployment method requires a GitHub account and repository, and external services such as hosting may incur separate charges.
  • Demo images, fonts, icons, and other third-party assets must be checked against their respective licenses; they cannot be judged solely by the code's MIT license.
  • External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments, or AI may incur additional charges.

How this score is calculated

Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.

The catalog identifies Eleventy as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.

# eleventy-chapbook

An Eleventy v3 starter for chaptered literary sites. Designed for serialized fiction, novellas, and other long-form prose.

Part of a family of interoperable templates:
- **eleventy-pamphlet** - minimal, single layout
- **eleventy-chapbook** (this) - separate layouts, feature-rich
- **eleventy-folio** - polished, with extras

The `content/` directory is portable across all three. Swap templates to change the presentation without touching your content.

## Quick start

```
git clone <this-repo> my-project
cd my-project
npm install
npm run start
```

Then open `http://localhost:8082`.

## Customization

### Site metadata

Edit `content/_data/metadata.js`:

```js
export default {
  title: "Your Literary Work",
  siteName: "yoursite.lol",
  url: "https://example.com/",
  language: "en",
  description: "A description of this work.",
  author: {
    name: "Author Name",
    url: "https://example.com/about/",
  },
}
```

Note: `metadata.js` lives inside `content/_data/` so the entire `content/` directory is self-contained and portable.

### Single-page vs multi-chapter

**Multi-chapter works:** Add files to `content/chapters/`. Each needs front matter:

```yaml
---
title: The Title of This Chapter
order: 1
description: Optional. Used in the HTML meta description tag.
---
```

- `order` controls sort order in the TOC and prev/next navigation
- Filename determines the URL: `ch04-the-storm.md` → `/chapters/ch04-the-storm/`
- Chapter pages get a numbered header and prev/next navigation

**Chapter sorting:** Chapters are sorted by `order` property (ascending, fallback to 999 if missing), then by filename alphabetically for determinism.

**Single-page works:** Delete the `content/chapters/` directory entirely. Your `index.md` becomes the whole work. It inherits the base layout with no chapter navigation or TOC.

### Home page

Edit `content/index.md`. Freeform markdown/HTML rendered above the chapter list. Put your epigraph, foreword, or dedication here.

### About page

Edit `content/about.md`. Colophon and credits. Uses nav key "About" order 2.

### Fonts, colors, and styles

All typographic and color tokens are CSS custom properties at the top of `css/index.css`:

```css
:root {
  --font-serif: p22-stickley-pro-text, Palatino, "Palatino Linotype", Georgia, serif;
  --font-sans: neue-kabel, "Gill Sans", "Gill Sans MT", Calibri, sans-serif;
  --color-bg: #fffff8;
  --color-text: #1a1a18;
  --color-muted: #666;
  --color-link: #2a2a20;
  --color-border: #ccc;
}
```

Change any of these to retheme the site without touching the rest of the stylesheet.

**Adobe Fonts (Typekit):** This template uses `p22-stickley-pro-text` and `neue-kabel` from Adobe Fonts. The kit IDs are baked into `_includes/layouts/base.njk`. To use different fonts, replace the Typekit `<link>` tags and update the CSS variables.

**Other web fonts:** Add a `<link>` to your font provider in `_includes/layouts/base.njk` and update the `--font-serif` or `--font-sans` variable in `css/index.css` to match.

### Literary markdown features

`markdown-it` is configured with `html: true`, so raw HTML works in markdown:

**Drop cap** (large decorated first letter + small-caps first line):

```html
<p class="drop">It was a dark and stormy night...</p>
```

**Scene heading** (centered italic with em-dash decoration, renders as `h4`):

```markdown
#### The Road at Midnight
```

**Character voice heading** (italic sans-serif, renders as `h3`):

```markdown
### The Stranger
```

**Section break** (centered small-caps, renders as `h2`):

```markdown
##
```

## Project structure

```
content/
  _data/
    metadata.js          # Title, author, URL
  index.md               # Home page (opening prose + chapter list)
  about.md               # Credits / colophon
  chapters/
    chapters.11tydata.js # Layout for all chapters
    ch01-the-beginning.md
    ch02-the-middle.md
    ...
_includes/
  layouts/
    base.njk             # HTML shell
    home.njk             # Home page layout
    chapter.njk          # Chapter layout with prev/next
css/
  index.css              # All literary styles
```

The `content/` directory is designed to be portable. Copy it to eleventy-pamphlet or eleventy-folio to get a different presentation with the same content.

## npm scripts

| Command | Description |
|:--------|:------------|
| `npm run start` | Dev server at `0.0.0.0:8082` with live reload |
| `npm run build` | Production build to `_site/` |
| `npm run debug` | Build with Eleventy debug output |

## Deploy

The included `.github/workflows/pages.yml` builds and deploys to GitHub Pages on push to `main`. No configuration needed for custom domains — the workflow detects the repo name and sets the path prefix automatically.
