Template Details

Urban is a Jekyll corporate website template for web agencies, created by CloudCannon, with the repository described as "Agency template for Jekyll". The template's component library is built on and maintained for Bookshop, and its pages and components are adapted for CloudCannon's visual editing.

Functionally, the template provides pre-built pages and pre-styled components, a client portfolio, blog and post category pages, a staff and author system, RSS/Atom feeds, as well as theme switching, customizable themes, and dark mode. Navigation and footer are managed via data files, and the contact form works with CloudCannon by default but can be swapped for other services such as Formspree.

Important limitations: the repository title explicitly states "LEGACY TEMPLATE NO LONGER MAINTAINED"; the README records Jekyll version 4.2.0, which only indicates the version at build time and does not promise compatibility with newer versions. The code is MIT licensed, but third-party assets such as demo images, fonts, and icons require separate license checks, and external services (such as form services and hosting) may incur additional charges.

Getting started & customization

Use these recorded setup notes alongside the repository instructions for your chosen version.

  1. 1

The README marks the template as legacy and no longer maintained; assess its maintenance status before use

  2. 2

For local development, run npm install first to install Bookshop dependencies, then enter the site directory and run bundle install

  3. 3

Run the site with npm start, executed from the project root

  4. 4

Fill in the site name and live domain in the site settings, and add authors in the staff collection

  5. 5

The contact form works with CloudCannon by default; switching to services like Formspree requires configuring the endpoint yourself

Usage conditions & limitations

Free to use · keep license notice

This entry covers the free version under the MIT license in the public repository; the free scope is the code of this version and does not mean external services or third-party assets are free.

Must comply with when using

  • You are allowed to use, modify, commercialize, and distribute the code of this version for free.
  • When distributing copies or substantial portions of the code, retain the original author's copyright notice and the full MIT license notice.
  • The code is provided as is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.

Additional costs & items to verify

  • The template has been marked by the author as legacy and no longer maintained; there will be no further feature updates or security fixes, so assess long-term maintenance risks yourself before use.
  • The contact form depends on CloudCannon by default; if you switch to another form service such as Formspree, you need to register an account, configure the endpoint yourself, and third-party service fees may apply.
  • Visual live editing depends on the CloudCannon platform, requiring a CloudCannon account; its hosting and editing services may be paid.
  • The component library depends on the Bookshop toolchain; local development requires installing npm dependencies first, and the build process depends on a Node and npm environment.
  • The README mentions the Formspree form service; real submissions require configuring a service endpoint, and its usage limits and fees must be checked separately.
  • Demo images, fonts, icons, and other third-party assets must be checked against their respective licenses; the code's MIT license alone is not sufficient to judge.
  • External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments, or AI may incur additional charges.

How this score is calculated

Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.

The catalog identifies Jekyll as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.
