Template Details
This is a starter template for App Engine projects, with the repository named app-engine-starter by bryik. It targets the Python 3 runtime of Google App Engine standard environment, replaces the old Python 2-era webapp2 approach with Flask, and provides a directly runnable local development entry point.
The template includes a Bootstrap-based page skeleton, with the navigation bar semi-automated via Jinja2 and unnecessary parts from the Bootstrap example removed; the page structure covers the homepage and inner pages such as about. The development workflow relies on pipenv to manage the virtual environment; after running main.py, it starts locally at 127.0.0.1:8080. For deployment, run gcloud app deploy in the directory containing app.yaml, and you can switch the target project via gcloud config set project.
In terms of limitations, the repository was last updated in March 2021, and the Bootstrap, Flask, and Jinja2 versions mentioned in the README are older, so you should verify the dependency list before use; the template itself only provides a basic skeleton and does not include business features such as databases or authentication. The code is under the MIT license, but third-party assets such as images, fonts, and icons in the demo site need separate license verification.
Is it right for your project?
Use Cases
- Quickly setting up a Flask project skeleton on App Engine standard environment
- A starting reference for migrating an old Python 2 + webapp2 project to Python 3 + Flask
- Needing a static page starting point with Bootstrap navigation and basic inner pages
Suitable For
- Developers using Google Cloud and familiar with the gcloud command line
- Python developers who want to use Flask as the App Engine application entry point
- Those who need a lightweight, business-logic-free starter template for further development
Getting started & customization
Use these recorded setup notes alongside the repository instructions for your chosen version.
- 1
You need to first create a project in Google Cloud Console and install the Google Cloud SDK
- 2
Local development requires pipenv to be installed in advance; run pipenv install and pipenv shell in sequence
- 3
Run python main.py to start the local development server, with the default address http://127.0.0.1:8080/
- 4
Before deployment, confirm that gcloud points to the target project; you can run gcloud app deploy in the directory containing app.yaml
- 5
The repository was updated in 2021, and the dependency versions listed in the README are older; please verify the dependency list before use

Usage conditions & limitations
Free to use · keep license noticeThis entry covers the free version under the MIT license in the public repository; the free scope is the code of this version and does not mean external services or third-party assets are free.
Must comply with when using
- Free use, modification, commercial use, and distribution of this version's code are permitted.
- When distributing copies or substantial portions of the code, retain the original author's copyright notice and the full MIT license notice.
- The code is provided as is; warranties and limitations of liability are governed by the original license and applicable law.
Additional costs & items to verify
- Use and deployment depend on Google Cloud: you must first create a project in Google Cloud Console and install the Google Cloud SDK, which are external service and account requirements.
- Before deployment, gcloud must point to the target project (gcloud config set project PROJECT_ID), otherwise it cannot be deployed to the specified App Engine project.
- Local development requires pipenv to be installed in advance, and pipenv install and pipenv shell must be run to start.
- Demo images, fonts, icons, and other third-party assets need to be checked under their respective licenses and cannot be judged solely by the code's MIT license.
- External services such as domains, hosting, databases, payments, or AI may incur additional charges.

How this score is calculated
Our heuristic uses license records (up to 30), a demo link (12), a preview (10), stars (15), recorded maintenance (15), description completeness (8), feature records (5) and classification data (5). It is not a code, security or performance test, or a Google score. A link does not establish tested functionality.

A demo link is listed. Check it with your own content and viewport sizes; its presence does not confirm that forms, authentication or payments work.
The catalog identifies Flask as the primary stack. Check the actual dependency manifest and lockfile for versions and hosting requirements. These notes use recorded metadata, not a code audit or a deployment test.

In August 2018, Google finally saw fit to bless us with [Python 3 on App Engine's standard environment](https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/gcp/introducing-app-engine-second-generation-runtimes-and-python-3-7). Goodbye Python 2 and webapp2, hello Python 3 and Flask.
**Built with**:
- [Bootstrap v4.1](https://getbootstrap.com/docs/4.1/getting-started/introduction/)
- [Flask v1.0.2](http://flask.pocoo.org/)
- [Jinja2](http://jinja.pocoo.org/docs/2.10/)
Hosted on [Google App Engine](https://cloud.google.com/appengine/).
# Usage
First off, go to [Google Cloud Console](https://console.cloud.google.com/) and create a new project. Then install the [Google Cloud SDK](https://cloud.google.com/sdk/).
## Development
1. Open a shell.
2. `pipenv install` to install Flask to a virtual environment (must have [pipenv](https://docs.pipenv.org/) already installed).
3. `pipenv shell` to open a new shell with the virtual environment activated.
4. `python main.py` to start a local development server at http://127.0.0.1:8080/
## Deployment
If Google Cloud SDK is set to this project:
1. Open shell in the directory containing "app.yaml"
2. Run `gcloud app deploy`
If Google Cloud SDK **is not** set to this project you can switch to it with
```bash
gcloud config set project PROJECT_ID
```

Bootstrap's [starter template](https://getbootstrap.com/docs/4.1/examples/starter-template/) was adapted slightly (navbar made semi-automatic with Jinja2, removed a bunch of stuff).
